REVIEW: Porcelain Boys: Away Awhile

Fans of Scott Reynolds era ALL need to take note of the underrated juggernaut known as the Porcelain Boys. Poppy pop punk is what we got here, brought to us by Pop Kid Records (A label almost as underrated as this band). The band never got the recognition they deserved and only had this single album, but as far as I’m concerned this is a must own. In fact you may see me call multiple songs on here my favorite. Most of this album will be stuck in your head.

‘If You Were Real’ This is one of the most Scott Reynolds like songs on here, with some G-Whiz thrown in, the second I heard the opening lines of this I knew I loved this band. This song is catchy as fuck. My favorite song.
‘Five Feet From My Door’ This song reminds me of a nice summer day and a dreary rainy day at the same time. Poppy and uplifting with some downsides all at once.
‘Icewarm’ Slowing things down a little bit here, this totally reminds me of an ALL song. Melodic and catchy, some great hooks.
‘Donuts’ Also my favorite song. This again reminds me of Scott Reynolds but more post-ALL Scott. This one is fast and fun.
‘Puffed’ Another great song, I’m amazed at how this bad didn’t catch on like wildfire. This seems like a Mega City Four throwback song, with a little more energy thrown in.
‘Hey Melissa’ probably my all time go-to Porcelain Boys song. My favorite song, this motherfucker will get stuck in your head more than you’ll ever want.
‘Bedtime’ Totally a Cruz Records type of song, think Big Drill Car/Chemical People.
‘Green Skies’ A great follow-up to the previous song, more Cruz style stuff. Did I mention how great this album flows too?
‘Broke’ Slow acoustic intro until the 20 second mark then we rev up like an engine. My favorite song, again. This is the song I’d throw on a mix tape.
‘Sidetrack’ Sidetrack, totally not a skippable track.
‘Squeaky Clean’ My favorite song, I donno this reminds me of some sort of weird Mega City Four/G-Whiz fuck child. A great song that seems to mix the best elements of both bands into a Porcelain Boys classic.
‘Away Awhile’ And we close out the album is the slowest and longest song on the album. Clocking in at just over seven minutes, holy fuck this song is great.

  1. [...] my favorite bands.  I’m just always surprised at how many other folks love them too! Read it here ! August 12, 2010 at 8:26 am by mnpunk Category: Porcelain BoysTags: Porcelain [...]

  2. Actually this is not their only release. They have another CD under the name Jettison (changing drummers is not a reason to change your name…especially this band that really only has 2 permanent members). They also have 2 7″ers under the PB name and appeared on many a compilation back in the day. There is plenty of PB goodness that you still need to seek out….and a good starting point for that might be click the link above. I’ve got a lot of their stuff linked up on my site, and I’m linking to your excellent review!

  3. Yeah I’ve got the Jettison CD it rules too but I guess technically I’m considering that a different band since it’s a different name. I discovered the 7″s after this was written too. Thanks for the link!

  4. Yeah I understand they weren’t very well like at all in their hometown, which blows my mind.

  5. I loved these guys!! They need to get back together and make some more music!!
