REVIEW: Captain America: The First Avenger

In the craze of all the comic book movies going on the past few years they’ve decided to have another go at Captain America. The previous movies have been hilarious and fun but very bad. Now in an era of higher standards in comic films, and the promise of an Avengers movie, here’s Captain America again. Directing it is Joe Johnston who also did Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, The Rocketeer, Jumanji, Jurassic Park II and The Wolfman…not the best record but based on The Rocketeer alone I’d have given him a chance. Behind the desk doing the writing is Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus the guys that were responsible for the Chronicles of Narnia movies. Chris Evans does a great scrawny small Steve Rogers who transforms into the symbol of America, Captain America, picking a better guy for this part would have been a really hard thing to do. Opposite him on the side of evil there’s Johnann Schmidt or Red Skull played by Hugo Weaving, he’s another case of the right man for the right job because Red Skull was great. But I can’t just single these two men out; there was plenty of great casting. Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, and of course Tommy Lee Jones all made this movie great. The movie itself starts in modern times where wreckage is found which we can assume contains the Captain, after just a few minutes in present day we’re set in a movie long flash back to the World War II era. That’s probably my favorite thing about this movie, instead of making it all modern where chances are it would have been really dumb they instead made a World War II movie in a comic book style. If you like comic books, which I do, and you like war movies, which I do, chances are you’re going to like this one a lot.
