REVIEW: Diabolique

If Alfred Hitchcock were French I’d have sworn this was one of his films. Done in 1955 it’s creepy and suspenseful, part thriller, part horror, part mystery, anyone who brushes off Black and White or foreign movies as not that good, they obviously haven’t seen this one. It revolves around a woman; she’s got a weak heart, and is married to a pretty awful guy. He’s the headmaster at a school and mistreats his wife basically every way you can think of, he’s even got a mistress that stays there. Apparently the mistress isn’t too fond of the guy either because they conspire to kill the man. All goes well until they discover the body is gone a few days later, then some real strange shit starts to happen around the school, the guy turns up in photos, kids claim to have seen him, it’s pretty unnerving. Word is that this movie inspired Hitchcock to make Psycho and the author of the novel Psycho claims that Diabolique is his favorite horror film. I’d say this movie could go toe to toe with Psycho and hold its own ground, granted personally Psycho would win, but Diabolique gives it a pretty good run. If you like horror or mystery movies I can’t recommend this one enough, it’s phenomenal.
