A Storm To Come
Van Canto is one of the most unusual bands you will find. What makes them stand out? They are an a cappella metal band. You read that right, a metal band, no guitars or anything, just straight vocals. They do have a drummer which is a bit of a sellout, but I’ll let it slide because they also do a lot of awesome covers (Manowar, Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, Metallica and Grave Digger). I’ll admit the first time I heard Van Canto I thought it was hilarious, and a bit weird, but they quickly grew on me and now I’m eagerly awaiting their 3rd studio album. The bad really is something you’ve got to hear for yourself, what you’ve got in your head as what they might sound like does them no justice.

Weekly Band Profile: Engage

Name: Engage
From: Glen Allen, Virginia
Web Site: n/a
Lifespan: 2005-2008
Genre: Power Metal
Best Release: EVERYTHING
Demo 2005
Don’t Turn Back EP
Engage was a little power metal band from Virginia, and they were amazing. I got the pleasure of seeing them once or twice, all some seemingly high school guys belting out some major tunes. When I saw them life the set was peppered with a lot of cover songs because they were a young band, but I’ll never knock a band for throwing in some Manowar covers. The band broke up in 2008 when they wanted to go a ‘different direction musically’. Engage is missed.

Weekly Label Profile: Magic Circle Music

Name: Magic Circle Music
Lifespan: 2005-Present
Web Site:
Notable Releases/Bands: HolyHell, Manowar, Rhapsody of Fire
A pretty new label on the scene you’ll find a lot of power metal here. Founded by Manowar Bassist Joey DeMaio, to give Manowar complete creative control of their operation and to help other bands instead of having them screwed over by bigger labels.

Weekly Label Profile: Metal Blade

Name: Metal Blade Records
Lifespan: 1982-present
Web Site:
Notable Releases/Bands: Amon Amarth, Anvil, Armored Saint, Bolt Thrower, Hirax, King Diamond, Lizzy Borden, Manowar, Mercyful Fate, Slayer, Vader
Info: Founded by Brian Slagel in 1982, headquarters in California, when you see Metal Blade on an album it’s a pretty safe bet that it’s going to be good, especially if it’s from the 80’s. When I’m taking a chance on a Metal album seeing that Metal Blade logo on the back is definitely a sell point. If you’re into heavy metal and power metal you can’t go wrong with old Metal Blade releases. Currently they’ve staggered and gotten more than a few shitty bands but they’ve got enough good ones still signed that I wouldn’t write them off yet.
