REVIEW: Sick Sick Birds: Gates of Home

One of Baltimore’s best, Sick Sick Birds is here to bestow their second album, ‘Gates of Home’ on us. I was as a chicken to hear this album, and had really high expectations for it. The album took those expectations and completely kicked their ass. There have been a lot of great albums released in 2012 and ‘Gates of Home’ is right up there at the top of the list with them. If you’re not familiar with Sick Sick Birds yet this is a great place to start. Members have been in some other great Baltimore bands like The Thumbs and Blank, they’ve got an indie punk sound that’s kind of like Superchunk but better. You can really hear a lot of influences in this, everything from The Pixies to Husker Du and I’ll still call Sick Sick Birds better than all of them. Their first album wasn’t very long, it only had eight songs on it, this one kicks it up a little bring us to ten great songs but they like to keep things short. It’s a clear case of quality over quantity with this band. There’s not a down spot on this entire album but songs like Spinning Jenny, One Town Over, Caution Wires and Scaffold make you wonder how any other band doing this style could even hope to compare to this band. If you like you’re indie punk and pop merged together and infused with greatness Sick Sick Birds is the band for you and ‘Gates of Home’ is the album you need.

SHOWS I SEEN: Barecat/Sick Sick Birds – March 16nd 2012 – Kclingers Tavern – Hanover, PA

Kclingers Tavern – Hanover, PA

Barecat – My second time seeing Barecat, they’re a good late 90′s type pop punk band. I wish I’d get more chances to see them play because both times they’ve been really good. Keep an eye on these guys, there’s good things coming out of this band.

Sick Sick Birds – One of the best, if not the best melodic post-punk bands going today. They were tight as always, they’ve had a little lineup tweak since the last time I saw them, and maybe even better somehow. They had a pretty good spread of songs from their catalog, including some stuff off of the new album, which if you don’t have or haven’t heard yet you need to change that. It’s crazy good.

Kid Pa – Kid Pa opened the show before, I’d never heard these guys before but I enjoyed their set. They seemed like some late 90′s/early 00′s style of punk.

SHOWS I SEEN: The Queers/The Apers – January 19th 2011 – Black Cat – D.C.

Sick Sick Birds – Baltimore locals who I’ve seen somewhere around 15 times now, they always put on a top top top notch set. This one was no exception. They even sounded better than I’d ever heard them sound tonight. They played some songs from their upcoming album, which just makes me even more excited for it to come out.

The Apers – I saw the Apers at Insubordination Fest when they played, but I don’t think you can totally count that. Here they put on a great show, played almost everything I wanted them to. They had some energy, sounded great, great set.

The Queers – I’ve seen the Queers 8 or 9 times now, they always always put on a fun show, this time they were par for the fun course. The set was pretty much your standard Queers set complete with covers of The Beach Boys, Ramones, Screeching Weasel and Black Flag. They played 2 songs from their new album (Tit Fuck and I Knew GG When He Was a Wimp), well they played 3 off of it if you count the Black Flag cover. A fucking fun night was had.
