Black Cat – Washington D.C.

Wednesday, January 19th 2011

Sick Sick Birds – Baltimore locals who I’ve seen somewhere around 15 times now, they always put on a top top top notch set. This one was no exception. They even sounded better than I’d ever heard them sound tonight. They played some songs from their upcoming album, which just makes me even more excited for it to come out.

The Apers – I saw the Apers at Insubordination Fest when they played, but I don’t think you can totally count that. Here they put on a great show, played almost everything I wanted them to. They had some energy, sounded great, great set.

The Queers – I’ve seen the Queers 8 or 9 times now, they always always put on a fun show, this time they were par for the fun course. The set was pretty much your standard Queers set complete with covers of The Beach Boys, Ramones, Screeching Weasel and Black Flag. They played 2 songs from their new album (Tit Fuck and I Knew GG When He Was a Wimp), well they played 3 off of it if you count the Black Flag cover. A fucking fun night was had.

Name: Art of the Underground
Web Site: http://www.artoftheunderground.com/
Notable Releases/Bands: The Measure (sa), Kepi Ghoulie, The Copyrights, Sick Sick Birds, Delay, The Steinways, The Apers, Unwelcome Guests, The Jetty Boys, The Manges, Radio Faces, The Unlovables, Andrew Jackson Jihad, The Potential Johns, The Ergs!, Lemuria, The Bayonettes, Mischief Brew
Info:
Art of the Underground is a label that if you don’t know you probably should. They put out a ton of pop punk but don’t just limit themselves to that. They’ve been putting out great records for years but are probably most known for their Single Series. This has been running for years and has close to 50 volumes. It will take one band, put out a single (2 songs), these are mostly done with a limited pressing of 250-350 copies.

Weekly Label Profile: Asian Man Records

Name: Asian Man Records
Lifespan: 1996-current
Web Site: http://www.asianmanrecords.com/
Notable Releases/Bands: The Apers, Lemuria, Mike Park, The Queers, The Riptides, Alkaline Trio, Ben Weasel, The Broadways, Screeching Weasel, The Riverdales, Softball, Squirtgun, Teen Idols, Toys That Kill
Info: Asian Man Records is one of the labels I respect the most. Not that haven’t put out anything bad but most of the stuff is quality. What really earns them street cred is the fact that it’s run by Mike Park, I’m not 100% sure if this is still the case but it use to be a one man operation. You’d never know it with the level of quality that comes from Asian Man, there’s a lot to be said for Mike’s hard work.

Top 20 albums of 2009

Alright this is the first time I think I’ve attempted this, a couple notes first here. I’m leaving ‘Iron Maiden: Flight 666′ of the list here because Iron Maiden is in a league of their own and will always capture the top spot with an unfair advantage. Second note I’m also leaving off ‘Death: For The Whole World To See’ it was released this year but actually happened in the 70′s, so I’m not sure if it qualifies. If I leave it on it would most likely be in the top 5 because it is amazingly awesome. Also I’m not including 4 that would have most likely made it, “R.A. the Rugged Man: Legendary Classics Vol 1″, “Deep Sleep: Three Things At Once”, “Psyched To Die: Year One” and “Drag the River: Bad at Breaking Up” because they are compilations. And lastly I’m not including “Judas Priest: A Touch of Evil: Live” because it is a live album.
