Teenage Bottlerocket - Teenage Bottlerocket is a band I’ve seen a bunch now too, I was surprised they were headlining over the Queers but I guess they’re switching off on this tour. Their set was one of the best ones I’ve seen from them in a while too. They played some Lillingtons stuff and that SACK song that they covered (Headbanger) so I was pretty happy with the set.

The Queers - I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the Queers sets during this tour basically saying they’re not very good. I’m not sure what the hell those people are talking about because the Queers were great on this night. I’ve seen the Queers a ton of times now and this was in the top part of that list, their set was the most fun I had the entire night.

Masked Intruder - This was my first time seeing Masked Intruder, I’ve been listening to their stuff since it first came out. They were pretty good, it was a really fun set, and they even had their parole officer with them. There was sadly no ‘Heart Shaped Guitar’ but even without that it was a real good set.

Whiff - I’ve seen Whiff a good number of times now, they’re a local band and they’re pretty fucking great. It’s apparent that they just keep getting better and better because this may have been the best Whiff set I’ve seen yet. I really want these guys to release an album because I’ve listened to the 7″ they have out a ton already and need more. Musically Whiff’s set may have

REVIEW: Punxelated Photo Zine

Simply put, this guy takes the best live band photos I’ve ever seen, they’re just fucking amazing. In 2012 Marc (the photographer) decided to put some of them together in a photo zine, I was stoked and picked it up at Insub Fest. This thing is pretty awesome; it’s twenty five or thirty pages of nice thick paper with these great full color photos. It’s got pictures from tons of bands Descendents, Hammerhead, Cock Sparrer, Municipal Waste, Propagandhi, Bad Religion, Hanson Brothers, The Queers, Punch, The Ergs!, The Dopamines, and Paint It Black just to name a few. Another great thing about this is Marc takes the time to write about what it’s like going to all these punk shows and taking photos at all of them. It’s a great combination of personal experience and great photos. If you like punk rock and enjoy looking at photos of said bands and even like to hear what it’s like being in the mix then you’ve got to check out Punxelated. I really hope there are more issues to come because this one is great. Coincidently I’m also wearing the Mikey Erg shirt featured in here as I write this.

SHOWS I SEEN: Night Birds/The Queers/Screeching Weasel – May 17th 2012 – Sonar – Baltimore, MD

Sonar – Baltimore, MD
Thursday, May, 17th 2012

I had not been back to Sonar since the Insubordination Fest fiasco a few years ago; I had not planned on ever returning. The place is pretty shitty, I’ve n ever liked it, and then that whole situation was just the last straw. However with months leading up to the event I was talked into going by various people. The show was pretty expensive for a pop punk show, $22 (twice the price I’ve ever paid to see The Queers). Screeching Weasel wasn’t even really the band we know as Screeching Weasel, it was Ben Weasel and some other guys. But I figured the Queers are always great, and my main reason for going was the Night Birds. And judging by the way the bands played the lineup should have been flipped.

Night Birds – This is the first time I’ve seen Night Birds since Mike quit and they got a new guy on guitar. It was a little weird to see them without the guitar player on the floor playing but they totally killed it. The best set of the night was over when they walked off stage.

The Queers - At this point in life there’s not much I can say about the Queers. If you’ve ever seen the Queers play then you know it’s always a fun time. They always bring the fun fuck you style of pop punk and I always love seeing it. It would have been pretty great if they’d played ‘Ben Weasel’ thought.

“Screeching Weasel” – Ben Weasel is a rock star, and in rock star fashion he had to make everyone wait for the band to appear on stage. When that happened there was a lead up with fucking entrance music. I was half surprised Ben wasn’t lowered from the ceiling, or brought out being carried on a throne. That being said I’ll give them some credit. I don’t know how long they’ve been playing with this lineup but they were pretty tight. And they played pretty much every song I needed, though with a two page set list that included two encores, how could you not. Ben looked pretty bored on stage half the time, and of course went off on a few little rants with jokes that no one but him really found funny. Overall they had a pretty average band performance.

Lookout Records 1987-2012

One of the most predominate pop punk labels around has finally closed its doors this year after twenty five years of business. Lookout was started by Larry Livermore and David Hayes to released punk records, they didn’t strictly stick to that but it is still what they’re most known for. They’ve had many problems in the past with labels pulling their songs and Larry Livermore leaving the label but they still stand as maybe the best pop punk record label to ever exist. The label has released material by tons of noteworthy bands such as Alkaline Trio, Avail, The Bomb Bassets, The Crumbs, The Donnas, Dr. Frank, Even in Blackouts, The Eyeliners, Fifteen, Go Sailor, Green Day, The Groovie Ghoulies, The Hi-Fives, The Lillingtons, The Mopes, The Mr. T Experience, Operation Ivy, Pansy Division, Ben Weasel, Boris the Sprinkler, Born Against, Crimpshrine, Parasites, Pinhead Gunpowder, The Riverdales, Samiam, Screeching Weasel, Squirtgun, Sweet Baby, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, The Queers, Rancid, and The Zero Boys. If you like punk music at all chances are you know Lookout Records and even if you still don’t, you loved them at some point. Despite what has happened to the label in recent years it’s still a sad day now that they have finally closed up shop.
