REVIEW: The Riptides: Tough Luck

The Riptides are one of those bands that keep the classic pop punk sound going. If you’re a fan of The Ramones or Screeching Weasel, chances are you like the Riptides. ‘Tough Luck’ is the latest release by the band on Rally Records following two albums and a 7″. Sporting a kick ass cover the content on this doesn’t disappoint either. With songs like “Johnny’s Back In Vietnam” I can already tell this is going to get listened to a lot.

1. Riot In Juvenile Prison
2. Doomsday Device
3. Johnny’s Back In Vietnam
4. Friday The 13th

Asian Man Records brings us the new Riptides album. New classic pop punk, this will fit in on your shelf very nicely between your Queers albums and your Steinways records. They’ve got a sound that instantly hooked me and I think this is their best album to date. Awesome cover and even better sounds. If you’re a fan of pop punk don’t wait to go get this record.

Name: Asian Man Records
Lifespan: 1996-current

Notable Releases/Bands: The Apers, Lemuria, Mike Park, The Queers, The Riptides, Alkaline Trio, Ben Weasel, The Broadways, Screeching Weasel, The Riverdales, Softball, Squirtgun, Teen Idols, Toys That Kill
Info: Asian Man Records is one of the labels I respect the most. Not that haven’t put out anything bad but most of the stuff is quality. What really earns them street cred is the fact that it’s run by Mike Park, I’m not 100% sure if this is still the case but it use to be a one man operation. You’d never know it with the level of quality that comes from Asian Man, there’s a lot to be said for Mike’s hard work.

Alright this is the first time I think I’ve attempted this, a couple notes first here. I’m leaving ‘Iron Maiden: Flight 666′ of the list here because Iron Maiden is in a league of their own and will always capture the top spot with an unfair advantage. Second note I’m also leaving off ‘Death: For The Whole World To See’ it was released this year but actually happened in the 70′s, so I’m not sure if it qualifies. If I leave it on it would most likely be in the top 5 because it is amazingly awesome. Also I’m not including 4 that would have most likely made it, “R.A. the Rugged Man: Legendary Classics Vol 1″, “Deep Sleep: Three Things At Once”, “Psyched To Die: Year One” and “Drag the River: Bad at Breaking Up” because they are compilations. And lastly I’m not including “Judas Priest: A Touch of Evil: Live” because it is a live album.
